A CREATIVE NIGHT OF CONNECTION: MY EXPERIENCE AT CREATE + CATWALK
By Juliana Elliott
Recently I was invited to a neuro-inclusive event at Brand X in Darlinghurst. I hadn’t really heard of an event described as neuro-inclusive before, so I didn’t fully know what to expect. This particular event was called Create + Catwalk and was described as a celebration of creativity and inclusion, which sounded interesting. What I came away with that night, however, was much more than I anticipated—it was an inspiring and positive experience that I’ll remember for a long time.
From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was welcoming, and I sensed something different from other events I’ve attended. It may have been the person greeting us—warm, attentive, and focused on any needs I might have had—who invited us to be ourselves and simply enjoy the occasion.
People of all neurotypes mingled together, chatting and laughing in a space that felt comfortable and accepting. The event, as it turned out, wasn’t just about art or fashion. It was about creating something bigger—a shared sense of purpose and belonging.
One of my favourite parts of the evening was the communal activity of decorating a feature gown. It was such a simple yet powerful idea. Everyone—neurotypical and neurodivergent—worked side by side to create something beautiful. It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from. What mattered was the act of coming together. No judgement.
As we all contributed to the gown, it felt like we were connecting as a community over a shared accomplishment. Seeing one of the attendees model the final creation was brilliant.
What struck me most about the event was how thoughtfully it was designed to be inclusive. There were quiet rooms for those who needed a break, sensory-friendly lighting and music, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe that made everyone feel at ease.
Even though I am neurotypical, I have to admit that the option of a quiet space for time out was appealing to me. While I may not have the same needs as an autistic person, some of the accommodations felt like a relief for me too.
I loved seeing a space intentionally tailored for people of all neurotypes to feel safe and comfortable.
The highlight of the night was the catwalk show. Watching participants wear their own creations, showing pride and confidence, was heart-warming. It reminded me how important it is to have spaces where people can express themselves freely and authentically.
What I didn’t expect was how deeply the night would resonate with me personally. As a neurotypical person, I came to Create + Catwalk curious about what the event would be like. I left feeling inspired, moved, and connected to something much bigger than just a single evening.
Being part of something that aims to bring all neurotypes together is meaningful and gives me hope for a society that becomes more accepting and understanding of differences. Personally, I have a renewed sense of purpose to support and advocate for inclusivity in different parts of my life.
I would encourage others to attend one of these events. You’ll walk away having had fun, but also inspired—and perhaps, like me, feeling part of something much bigger than yourself.
