A common Autistic special interest is music—mine included. But traditional theatre and orchestral environments are not always flexible or welcoming for people like me. The Australian Chamber Orchestra is helping change that through its autism-friendly classical concerts.
With a breathtaking view of the Harbour Bridge, the ACO invites audiences to experience classical music in a new way. At Pier 2/3, their relaxed performances feature flexible seating, adjusted lighting and sound levels, and access to a quiet area—making the orchestral experience more accessible and inclusive.
I was lucky enough to speak with producer Anna Healey about what inspired these performances and how they were created.
Why Relaxed Performances?
V: What made you want to start doing relaxed performances? What inspired you to do something like this?
A: “Traditionally, classical music isn’t a genre of art that has been accessible for a greater number of people. Traditional concert halls and the way we watch classical music don’t always work for people who are neurodiverse or who have disabilities.
“So that means a lot of people are missing out on these beautiful shows. For us, it was about creating an experience where people who don’t normally feel comfortable in traditional concert halls can come and enjoy that beautiful orchestra.”
Learning and Preparation
V: What was it like preparing for an event like this? There must have been a lot of research and inquiry.
A: “We started our first relaxed performances in 2022, and we had five relaxed performances with the main orchestra. Four of those were children’s shows, with Auslan and audio-described options alongside the relaxed format.
“For us, it’s been a constant state of learning. We consult with industry leaders in accessibility and the disability space, and we listen to feedback from audiences about their experiences. Each time, we aim to make the experience more comfortable and more inclusive for the people who come.”
What’s Next
If you are looking for a welcoming and sensory-considerate way to enjoy classical music, keep an eye out for the next performance in the ACO’s autism-friendly series.
The upcoming concert, “Dvořák Serenade,” will take place on August 17, 2023. Tickets are $10.00 each, and it is an experience I highly recommend.
